Many thanks for taking the time to give us feedback, your comments back up what I found during the inspection. xxxxxxxxxx by the way was very chatty and very positive about his experiences at the home which was great. Previously he was not wanted to interact and I can see that for him there has been real growth in his confidence and social skills.

I am the allocated Social worker for xxxxxxxxxx since 28th July 2010. He is a 14 year old boy who has been placed at Thornbury House since 1st July 2009 due to unmanageable aggressive behaviour towards his mother. He has experienced multiple placement breakdowns due to his challenging behaviour.

Surecare has been the longest and most stable placement he has had and he feels happy and settled living there. Staff at Thornbury House have a really good understanding of xxxxxxxxxx attachment difficulties and how this affects his behaviour and are helping xxxxxxxxxx develop coping strategies to manage his anger with the support of their in-house Psychologist xxxxxxxxxx. The staff team have worked very hard to build a relationship with xxxxxxxxxx mother xxxxxxxxxx and have supported them both to build up to positive weekend/overnight contacts and there have been no violent incidents when he is at his mum's since he was placed at Thornbury House. Thornbury house is a nurturing home environment for xxxxxxxxxx and provides him with a secure base where he can learn to develop trusting adult relationships and know that those adults will keep him safe. Thornbury House have a good understanding of xxxxxxxxxx individual needs and have made it clear to xxxxxxxxxx that they are sticking by him especially during his recent period of being disruptive within the home and when he was recently at risk of a custodial sentence due to his persistent offending. xxxxxxxxxx has a particularly positive bond with his keyworker xxxxxxxxxx who he respects and listens to, xxxxxxxxxx has provided xxxxxxxxxx with a positive male role model that he has been lacking in his life.

When xxxxxxxxxx was experiencing difficulties at xxxxxxxxxx School because they appeared to be calling the police as a strategy for managing for managing his difficult behaviour, xxxxxxxxxx arranged for xxxxxxxxxx (Psychologist) to visit the school and offer advice/support she did this but the outcome in terms of the school remained the same and a decision was made that xxxxxxxxxx should not return to the building. whilst waiting for an alternative provision to be found, Surecare supported xxxxxxxxxx to complete his education work at home and remain motivated to do so without the aid of a tutor. Since 5th January 2011, he has been a pupil on the school role at xxxxxxxxxx in Colchester, he had a positive start but within a week he was excluded for 2 days for challenging/aggressive behaviour. He now has an individual tutor with a plan to integrate him back into the centre asap. Surecare have facilitated having regular professionals meetings at their offices in Stansted to discuss/review xxxxxxxxxx education plan.

Thornbury House are excellent at keeping me informed about xxxxxxxxxx progress and alert me to both good and bad things, they reward his achievements and provided appropriate sanctions for inappropriate behaviour. I have nothing but praise for the staff at Thornbury House and know that xxxxxxxxxx is safe and well cared for there. I am always made to feel welcome on my visits to the home and given private space to see xxxxxxxxxx on his own. Thornbury House are meeting all xxxxxxxxxx needs in terms of the Every Child Matters outcomes.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further information.

Regards

Social Worker

Dear colleague

I understand that you have placed a child at Thornbury House. I am currently inspecting the service and have been given your email address as a contact. I would be grateful if you would take a few minutes to give some feedback on how well the home ensures that the needs of the child are met and how staff and management work in partnership with families and professionals. Many thanks for your time.
